Stress birefringence is generated in the single-mode fiber by mechanically squeezing the fiber (remember to control the squeezing force to avoid damaging the fiber). This is equivalent to a variable rotating wave plate, the polarization angle and delay of which can be adjusted continuously and individually, thereby converting any input polarization state into the desired output polarization state.
